Guzma Alola is a bright and sunny region, known for its beaches, palm trees, and variations on pokemon in other regions. Every child in Alola tries to complete the great Island Challenge, gathering Z-Crystals after completing island trials.

One such kid has been suggested to go to the Ruins of Conflict for her first trial, an old archaeological site and the home of the deity, Tapu Koko, and take a picture outside of the front doors. She will be met there by Ilima, the first Trial Captain, who is giving the girl the task as the first half of his trial.

Of course, to get to the Ruins of Conflict, you have to cross a long bridge over a chasm leading into water below. And there's some punks rudely in middle of the bridge.

These punks are dancing. They're two guys, one with white hair and goggles, and the other with dark hair. They're both wearing skull-shaped caps and black bandanas. "Yo, yo. This bridge is pretty nice." The white-haired one says. "Look at the water move by. Whoosh! I think we should keep the bridge." "Yeah, yo. We'll tell Guzma we got ourselves a bridge. He'll be so excited!"
Selene Ever since moving to Alola, Selene's adventures in the wild have been largely tame. Sure, it's only been a few days, but... Come on! Where's the exploding factories? The crazy parties? The attempts at human sacrifice?

No... No, it's just her luck that everyone seems pretty normal around Melemele Island. Still, going through the Island Challenge should still be a good source of excitement and worldly experience for the teenager.

Today's task, getting a picture of the Ruins of Conflict! When she reaches the bridge, though, she peers at those punks occupying the bridge, and she approaches them directly with a wide-eyed stare. "Hey! Whatcha doin'?" There's no hostility or even apprehension in her tone. Rather, she seems more inquisitive than anything else, standing uncomfortably close if they don't stop her from staring at their skull-caped caps while her definitely-flower-shaped hat bobs in the breeze.
Lory Thumper      As Selene arrives at the bridge and engages the skull kids, she finds that...there is what looks like a shiny lopunny suddenly standing beside her. Except this bunny is wearing a flannel shirt and a pair of blue jeans, though the shirt is open and shows that she is also wearing some body armor while her belt seems to hold a large number of tools and equipment, including a pair of pistols.

Her nose wiggles as she observes the scene, and her ears twitch at the name they mention. "Guzma, huh? Isn't that the guy who was just on the radio talking about a stolen surprise?" she asks, shifting her weight from one leg to the other and crossing her arms. She looks up at Selene as well and smiles a bit. "Here for the island challenge? I was just doing a bit of sight seeing and someone told me to go this way."

Seeing as she is only four feet tall, the talking bunny person is probably the shortest (and possibly cutest) thing here.
Guzma The punks are Koff and Simm, and the two of them are dancing. Koff, the white-haired one, speaks up. "What does it look like? We're dancing!" Simm speaks up too. "Yeah, buzz off, this is our bridge!"

The two are blocking the bridge pretty clearly. They just keep doing bad hip-hop dances, gesturing at each other. Koff speaks up again. "We're marking this bridge Team Skull territory. You want through, you gotta, uh...pay a toll?" Simm tilts his head to his buddy, and shakes his head. "No, that's not fair, that's highway robbery, bro."

"Yeah, you're right. Just go away, yo!" Koff says.
Selene "Hm... Yeah, are you guys part of...?" Selene starts to ask the Team Skull members, her gaze slowly drifting over above Lory and stopping for a moment, then lowering to make eye contact. There's a moment of silence from Selene as she tries to process what she's looking at, then...

"You're a talking bunny. Are you like a... A science experiment or something?" She reaches out towards Lory's ears slowly, stopping herself only thanks to Koff and Sim interrupting her train of thought with their talk of owning the bridge.

And then she breaks into immature giggling. "Heh heh. You're 'marking your territory'." The snickering keeps going for a good half minute or so, eventually calming down long enough to finally get her thoughts together.

"But... Come on. Can you really 'own' a bridge? Do any of us really own anything?"
Lory Thumper      Lory keeps eye contact with Selene as the younger girl looks toward her. And Lory isn't really surprised at the reaching toward her ears. She does blink in surprise at the question though. "What? No! I come from a world where pretty much all the mammals became humanoid." she says, huffing cutely and crossing her arms.

She looks toward Team Skull and...just rolls her eyes a bit and ends up laughing a bit as well thanks to Selene. "Whether you can own a bridge or not, just finding one somewhere and claiming it prooobably isn't going to work out very well. Especially since this bridge apparently leads to that island challenge place. You two should probably clear out before you get in trouble." she says, then looks up at Selene again before adding. "Oh. And you can call me Officer Lory Thumper. Paladin." she adds with a bit of a confident smirk.
Guzma Well, the group doesn't go away. "Huh? A cop? Paladins don't got no jurisdiction in Team Skull territory, y-yo!" Koff says, as Simm turns to Selene. "Yo, of course we can! What's that crud about 'not owning anything', huh? You pickin' a fight? We'll show you a fight!"

The two grab round, green and black spheres from around their waists, throwing out the dusk balls. Hovering in front of the group, further blocking the bridge, are a purple ghost - Haunter, as Selene would recognize it or be able to identify with Rotom, and a yellow ugly walking aardvark thing - Drowzee.

The bridge creaks slightly. The two Pokemon don't attack. Instead, the two thugs cross their arms over their shoulders in a pose-off, and the Haunter and Drowzee mimic, gang signs being thrown out. "Yo! Team Skull in the HOUSE!"
Selene A world made of animal people and people people. That visibly throws Selene's brain for a loop as she opens her mouth and shuts it several times, making vague hand gestures before shrugging finally. "Good thing you're not a cow, then. That'd be pretty rough!"

Her stomach growls as if on cue, but she ignores it in favor introducing herself to the three finally as the Team Skull members bring out their Pokemon. She holds her arm up by the elbow on one hand as she taps her Pokedex against her chin, scanning the Haunter and Drowzee to get some HOT DEETS about the two.

"Haunter, the Gas Pokemon! It fears the light and revels in the dark. It may be on the verge of extinction in cities that stay brightly lit at night!"

After the Pokedex belts out that little tidbit, Selene just puts that thing away to not have to hear what it says about Drowzee. Instead, she tosses her own Pokeball into the air, and out comes a huge blue bear cat thing with what looks like a luchador's mask on! The Snorlax lands behind the trainer in the floral shirt, one knee raised with its arms outstretched above its head while Selene takes to one knee in front of it with her arms pointed diagonally downwards and a bright grin plastered on her face.

"Selene and Slunch, ready to party!"
Lory Thumper      The bunny cop has never really been a fan of the thug life, and as the two start tossing out pokemon and posing she just stands there, expression deadpan and one ear flopped halfway forward. "...actually you are on a bridge, not in the house." she says, then snickers a bit.

She blinks and looks toward Selene as she mentions a cow and then her stomach growls. The bunny looks slightly disconcerted by that, but doesn't draw attention to it. Her ears perk as Selene pulls out that pokedex and it recites some information about Haunter.

And she almost leaps right out of her skin when suddenly a gigantic bear cat thing appears behind them. "Woah!" she exclaims as she hops back a few steps, then holds a hand to her chest as if trying to calm her heart. "Sweet peas and carrots! Warn a bunny before you do something like that!" she says before taking a few deep breaths. "...did you call that thing Slunch?"
Guzma Haunter laughs as the Pokedex scans it. Drowzee looks vaguely sad that it wasn't scanned. The two men are still dancing, as Selene throws out her pokedex, and out comes...

A Snorlax in a luchador mask.

On a wooden bridge.

"A Snorlax?!" Koff shouts, as the bridge starts to creak even more. "Oh, no, it's gonna collapse!"

And then, as so he said, the bridge breaks. Lory has just an inch of time to get away, but she won't be able to get both Selene and Slunch off the bridge. As Selene falls, she should be able to return Slunch to his ball, but she's going to hit the river below hard, and fast, as are the goons, and they're going to start streaming through it quickly.

And then, something shadows the bridge. It flies fast. A black and orange body, with poofy long orange 'hair', yellow shoulder rings, and two 'shell halves' that appear to make up a massive bird mask, one on each arm, larger than the creature itself. It flies in fast, moving to grab Selene (and Lory, if she fell), and carry them to safety. Koff and Simm would be washed away.

It's going to drop them on the side they came from, if there's not any problems carrying them.
Selene "That's right! Slunch ain't no slouch, and neither...?" Selene quirks an eyebrow as Koff and Simm start freaking out. "What's gonna coll-"

And then the bridge breaks underneath her. Slunch reaches out to grab Selene, but Selene's draw on the Pokeball is faster, and she recalls the giant in mid-plummet. She might not be that heavy, but something that heavy could sink to the bottom and drown even in a small river! Luckily for the trainer, however, she's caught by a.... Something. She can't quite comprehend what she's looking at just yet, just staring at the black and orange bird thing the entire way over to the other side of the river.

She promptly starts yelling unintelligibly. Not screaming in terror or anything, but just yelling to let the sudden burst of excitement out at seeing something new and unknown while her brain tries to catch up with her mouth. "WHAT. WHAT. THE. WHAT. THERE. YOU. WHAT."

Eloquent. Upon noticing that she's the only human around, though, she scrambles over a few feet to look towards the bridge again, pointing at where Koff and Simm had been. "Them. There! Where? Drowning?" She actually sounds worried as the initial shock starts to wear off, but full sentences aren't happening just yet.
Lory Thumper      Slunch lands on the bridge, and the creaking makes Lory's ears lay back. "...oh dear..." is all she manages before the bridge breaks apart. Lory is left falling through the air with Selene and Slunch! She is looking around for a way to catch them and is pulling what looks like a grappel gun from her belt when...what is this thing?! It catches them, but apparently leaves Team Skull to their fate.

She is only slightly more eloquent than Selene when they are on solid ground again. "Woah...what are you?" she asks, eyes wide. Then Selene starts stammering about Team Skull and Lory looks down at the fast flowing water. "She's right! We have to help them, too!" she says to the mystery creature, then starts downstream. No one calls her a thug of a cop who doesn't care about anything but laws! She'll help those two even if they don't want it! Assuming she actually finds them, or actually can go downstream from here.
Guzma The weird Pokemon feels like static to the touch. But not the painful kind. It's kind of soothing? As Selene is dropped off, it looks like it's going to fly away, when she shouts and points at Koff and Simm. IT makes a 'kaw' noise, and a hm, and then nods.

As Lory tries to head down towards the riverside, the flying pokemon moves in with her. She'll be able to find Simm, choking on water, who could use a thick smack to the back to dislodge it, but Koff's still trapped in the river. Luckily...

Because of Selene, the legendary pokemon moves to pull Koff out of the water, and dump him next to Lory. He's on the phone, apparently, trying to talk to his boss, but is just coughing up water now.

Meanwhile, a tan boy with short pink hair shows up behind Selene, and his eyes widen as he sees the bridge. "Oh, no. Selene, are you alright? It seems we'll be unable to make the trial today. What happened?" This is Ilima, the trial captain, who tries to look out to see what's going on.
Selene After thatlittle freaking out fit is done with, Selene finally gets her shit together and starts plotting out a way to find and rescue the Team Skull guys! Maybe if she were to throw Lory at them and send Bu-

And then Lory and the flying Pokemon are off to rescue them. With Koff and Simm both accounted for, she finally breathes a heavy sigh of relief despite not moving very far at all. "Hoookay. Think that'll do for-"

And then Ilima appears out of nowhere. "Wah! Uh. Hi, Ilima! Yeah, I'm okay. That was... Did you see that?" She points downstream at where the mysterious black and orange Pokemon had gone, squinting into the distance to try and catch another glimpse of it. "There were these Team Skull guys, and then the bridge broke-"

Conveniently leaving out her own part in that, of course. "-and there was a freaky talking bunny, and then they went after the two to save them!" Once again, Selene sounds quite excited again. "It was great! I mean, we didn't get to fight or anything, but it just came in outta nowhere, and there's places out there where people eat human-shaped cows! And... Uh. What're you doing out here, anyway?"
Lory Thumper      Lory can't really deliver a thick smack, but she can deliver a sharp one! "Hey, you alright?" she asks the pair. If she knew Koff's name she'd probably snicker.

Her ears perk as she hears Selene, and even from her spot a good distance away she shouts, "I am not freaky! You humans are the freaky ones! Where is your fur?!" She makes sure that the Team Skull goons are okay before she guides them back toward the road. Of course, she doesn't force them. So if they run off she isn't going to stop them. She approaches Selene and Ilima and crosses her arms. "What was that thing anyway? It didn't seem like the pokemon you or those Team Skull guys were using. More...I dunno. Powerful, maybe?"

She holds up her left arm and rolls the sleeve back to reveal a high tech bracer, which she activates to produce a holodisplay and a recording of the creature. "I haven't been to this world before, but it seems like a rare creature if you ask me. Just the way it carried itself was more...authoritative, I think?"
Guzma Ilima just smiles, laughs, and blinks as Selene gets super excited, and then just stares at her when she asks 'why are you here'. "For your trial, of course." But she's had a hard time, so it makes sense to him that she forgot. "We'll have to reschedule it, and choose a different location for it. But that's..." As she points out to the creature, Ilima squints, and then widens his eyes as he sees Lory's holodisplay.

"Is that Tapu Koko?! Were you saved by Tapu Koko? That's amazing! Tapu Koko is the guardian deity of this island, but it's not known to be fond of strangers. The fact that it'd save you...that means you're quite special, Selene."

Of course, nearby, Simm and Koff hear this as well, and it's going to get to them, as they just a thumbs up to Lory, coughing out all the water. Of course it is. Ilima, regardless, keeps speaking. "Well, I wanted a picture of the Ruins of Conflict, but I don't believe ethat'll be necessary. You've completed the first half of your trial, by seeing something so wondrous, and for your friend providing a recording of such. We'll do the other half as soon as we can."

And then, blinking at Lory's appearance for a bit, Ilima smiles, and offers her a hand. "I am Ilima, one of Melemele's trial captains. It's a pleasure to meet new people from the Multiverse."
Selene "Ah! See? The human-shaped bunny cop!" Selene points Lory out as she approaches her and Ilima, settling down finally once the topic returns to the mysteriously hairy Pokemon. "It didn't, right? It was all... Fancy and regal and stuff. Like a... A deity, yeah." She nods slowly as Ilima identifies it, not quite putting two and two together until he all but spells it out for her.

"... Really? Neat! But if I wasn't special, then does that mean it would've just watched me and those other two die and get all bloated and gross and eaten by crabs?"

It's probably best not to engage her too much in that area.

"But if I can't get the picture... Ah, that's fine. I can't wait for the next trial!" Back to her chipper self, Selene jumps over to Lory with a sudden burst of energy and reaches over to clasp the bunny's hand tightly in her own. "Thanks for the help, officer! Yeah, Ilima's super smart. A lotta people come by to ask him questions about all sorts of things about Pokemon and phone numbers and stuff!"
Lory Thumper      Lory ends up kind of staring at Selene as she goes off on that 'what would happen if we died' tangent. Isn't this a little kid? The bunny shakes her head a bit, reminding herself that kids can be like that. "Tapu Koko, huh?" She doesn't put much stock in the deity thing, but she isn't going to be disrespectful about it. Ilima introduces himself, and Lory shakes his hand with a smile. "Officer Lory Thumper, MPD and Paladins." she says.

And flinches in surprise as Selene is suddenly there again. The bunny laughs, a combination of amusement and uncertainty, then smiles as Selene thanks her. "You're welcome! Though I'm not really sure I did anything." She blinks, then gives Selene a confused look. "...phone numbers?" It just seems a random addition to his qualifications. She giggles and shakes her head, then looks at Ilima. "So...I heard a somewhat disturbing rumor. Those that do not complete the island challenge are looked down upon by the rest of the islanders?"
Guzma Ilima just laughs, again, as Selene offers his qualifications. From the look in his eyes, he thinks she's a little weird, but he's a nice guy. "Indeed. I graduated from the Trainers' School, which is where we'll meet when the challenge continues." Ilima says, as he tilts his head at Lory's question.

"I personally wouldn't look down upon anyone for such a failing, but...it's possible. The island challenge is a big part of society around here. Being unable to best it would be a sore spot for many young adults."

And then, Ilima turns to leave. "Ah, sorry, but I can't stay and chat. I look forward to meeting you again, but now that this bridge is broken, I must see to getting a construction crew here. Alola!" It translates as 'goodbye', meaning that Alola is both the region and a greeting around here.

Tapu Koko is long gone, though, and Lory would have heard the Team Skull punks run off at some point, giddy about something or another. It seems there's nothing left to do here until the next part of the trial.
